Lessons from the Pandemic: The Training of Science and Biology Teachers for ICT and its Developments in Post-Pandemic Teaching

Abstract

The use of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) in education intensified during the COVID-19 pandemic, imposing profound changes on the educational landscape. This research investigated the training of Science and Biology teachers for the use of ICT throughout 2020 in the state of Paraná, Brazil, analyzing the evolution of training offerings during this period. Nine semi-structured interviews were conducted with state school teachers from a municipality in the western region of Paraná, which were transcribed and subjected to Bardin's Content Analysis. The results revealed that, before the pandemic, training on ICT was scarce, both in initial and continuing education. With the emergency adoption of remote teaching, the first training sessions were instrumental in nature, focusing on handling platforms such as Google Classroom. However, by the end of the school year, a qualitative evolution was observed with the offer of a more extensive course focused on specific pedagogical tools for Science Teaching. It is concluded that, despite the work overload, the types of training activities were modified throughout 2020, revealing a process of institutional learning about the necessary emphases for teaching practice, the ramifications of which remain relevant for continuing education policies in the post-pandemic context, especially given the consolidation of digital technologies as a structural component of contemporary pedagogical practices and the ongoing challenges of hybrid and digital education.

Master's degree in Science Education and Mathematics Education (PPGECEM) from the State University of Western Paraná (UNIOESTE). Postgraduate degree in Educational Technologies from FMU. Postgraduate degree in Educational Management and Teaching in Basic and Higher Education from Estratego College. Postgraduate degree in Special and Inclusive Education, with emphasis on Intellectual and Multiple Disabilities from FACUMIINAS. Bachelor's degree in Biological Sciences from UNIOESTE. Was a scholarship student in the Institutional Scholarship Program for Teaching Initiation (PIBID). Participant and organizer of the Science and Biology Education Group (GECIBIO) at UNIOESTE. Collaborator in the extension project: "Teacher training for Science and Biology Teaching". Scholarship recipient from the Araucária Foundation at NAPI Paraná Faz Ciência - Network of Science Clubs through UNIOESTE, for the organization and implementation of Science Clubs within the Paraná Faz Ciência Network. Débora de Mello Gonçales Sant'Ana , State University of Maringá (SUM)

She graduated in Pharmacy (1994), obtained a Master's degree (1996) and a Doctorate (2001) in Biological Sciences (Cell Biology) from the State University of Maringá (UEM). She specialized in Clinical Bioethics through the UNESCO Chair (2003) at the University of Córdoba. She graduated in Pedagogy (UEM/2012) with academic honors. She specialized in Neuroscience and Behavior at PUCRS (2021). She is an Associate Professor C at UEM. She works in the Center for Biological Sciences teaching undergraduate courses in Morphology for Biological and Health Sciences programs, conducting research in Experimental Neurogastroenterology and Scientific Dissemination, and participating in University Extension programs in Scientific Dissemination focusing on Neuroscience and in Extension Projects linked to the UEM Interdisciplinary Dynamic Museum (MUDI). Awarded the 29th Paraná Science and Technology Prize, Extension Researcher category, Health area in 2016 and the 34th Paraná Science and Technology Prize, Extension Researcher category, Biological Sciences area in 2021. She is a permanent faculty member of the Postgraduate Program in Biosciences and Physiopathology (PBF). She supervises in the areas of Neurogastroenterology and Parasitic Diseases, Neurosciences, and Scientific Dissemination. She has supervised 39 master's dissertations, 21 doctoral theses, 6 postdoctoral works, 28 specialization monographs, 14 undergraduate course completion projects, 179 scientific initiation students (PIC, PIBIC, PIBIS), in addition to supervising monitoring, extension, residency, and other activities. She is the author of 17 chapters in different books, focusing on Human Anatomy, Social Technology in Health, Bioethics and Neuroscience, Citizen Science, and 8 books focusing on the Human Organism and Medicinal Plants and Scientific Dissemination. She was Pro-Rector of Extension and Culture at UEM (2018-2022), was the elected coordinator of the PBF (2016-2018) and of MUDI from 2013-2015. She is the author and co-author of 162 scientific articles published in indexed journals and 37 complete works published in proceedings. She has obtained funding for research, extension, event organization projects, scientific dissemination projects, and infrastructure, notably the CNPq universal call for proposals (Scientific Dissemination Area), Proext/MEC. She has been a member of the Pop Science Committee of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MCTI) since 2024, recognized for her expertise. She represents UEM at the Itaipu Technological Park (PTI) in the development, organization, and coordination of the Science, Innovation and Engineering Fair (FICIENCIAS) (2011-present), which integrates researchers from higher education institutions with teachers and students from basic education throughout the state of Paraná and the neighboring provinces of Paraguay and Argentina. She was a productivity grant recipient from the Araucária Foundation in 2013-2015 and 2018-2019; a grant recipient from the National Education Fund (FNDE) in 2015-2016; and a CNPq productivity grant recipient in 2019-2022. She is a member of the team that conceived and implemented the actions related to Brain Week (Brain and Mind Lecture Series, editions 1 to 10), the UEM Biosciences and Physiopathology Symposium (editions 3 to 9), the Film and Science Dissemination Exhibition (editions 1 to 10), the Science Popularization Exhibition in Biosciences (editions 1 and 2), and Paraná Faz Ciência in 2021, 2022, and 2023, among others. She was a speaker at TEDx Maringá (Breaking Barriers) in 2016 and at Pint of Science (Londrina) in 2018 and Maringá in 2019 and 2024.
