Abstract

The metaphor of the Lighthouse and the Navigator symbolizes the tutor-student relationship within the Adaptive Modal Tutoring (TMA) framework, which was developed from the longitudinal observation of cohorts in the Tourism Licentiate Degree at EaD / UFRRJ-CEDERJ. The tutor assumes the role of the lighthouse, an ethical presence that signals safe routes without imposing trajectories, while the student-navigator acts as the agent of their own formative journey. TMA reconceptualizes the tutor’s role beyond reactive mediation, promoting proactive engagement grounded in data that reveal patterns of pedagogical risk even before any explicit student manifestation occurs. The central tension lies in the vulnerability exposed when summative assessments assign satisfactory grades yet fail to capture inconsistencies in actual learning. This disconnect fosters cognitive biases that lead students to overestimate their own route, thereby increasing the risk of the silent shipwreck. The lighthouse does not command; it offers guidance without demanding reciprocity. It neither judges, nor demands, nor controls: it simply remains available. Available to those navigating toward unseen rocks and to those who have not yet set sail, even when no vessel calls upon it, because its light is kindled not by demand but by the very possibility of navigation.
