Students Without Borders: Foreigners in Distance Higher Education in Brazil

Brazil is not exempt from the growing phenomenon of global migration driven by refugees, labor and/or economic migrants, and even people displaced by climate issues. While the country has been receiving various flows of international migrants, on the other hand, challenges of all kinds have emerged regarding the integration of these people into Brazilian society. Thus, this article analyzes the dynamics of foreign students in Distance Education in Brazil between 2013 and 2023, seeking to investigate growth trends, opportunities, and/or challenges faced by this population in accessing and remaining in Brazilian higher education. To this end, an exploratory research was used with a qualitative-quantitative approach with descriptive characteristics through a theoretical review of specialized bibliography and a survey of statistical data related to Distance Education in Brazil. There was an exponential growth in the number of foreign students in the distance learning modality during the period analyzed, especially those from the global south, and the need for more inclusive internationalization strategies focused on the quality of the educational experience of foreign students in distance learning.
