This article investigates how the teaching knowledge of tutors in Distance Education (DE) can be recognized and valued, considering the interactions between human and non-human actors within educational networks. The research adopts a sociotechnical approach. It examines the Virtual Learning Environment (VLE) as a sociotechnical network and a “black box” involving technical, pedagogical, and political mediations. Methodologically, this study is a systematic literature review with a qualitative and interpretive approach, adapting the PRISMA 2020 protocol and combining it with documentary analysis grounded in a sociotechnical perspective, data triangulation, and the analysis of nine analytical scenes (metaphors). The study also highlights the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the daily practice of DE as a non-human actor providing technical support within the sociotechnical network. The analysis reveals that, although tutors perform a central pedagogical role and mobilize essential forms of teaching knowledge, their work remains institutionally invisible. Recent legislative changes, such as Decree No. 12,456/2025 and MEC Ordinance No. 506/2025, introduce new distinctions between tutors and pedagogical mediators, creating tensions around the recognition of the teaching dimension historically associated with tutoring. The article concludes that tutors act as builders of the sociotechnical network and that recognizing and valuing their teaching identity is essential to the quality, democratization, and sustainability of the educational process in Distance Education.
