Risk Classification in Urgency and Emergency: Nurses’ Demands for The Development of Virtual Clinical Simulation

This study aimed to identify, based on the experience of nurses working in risk classification, the most relevant demands to subsidize the development of an innovative educational technology based on Virtual Clinical Simulation in Brazilian urgency and emergency services. This is an observational, open-survey study guided by the CHERRIES tool (Checklist for Reporting Results of Internet E-Surveys. A pilot data collection instrument was developed and, following validation, was widely disseminated. Data collection occurred during July 2025, with institutional support from the Brazilian Nursing Association (ABEn), using non-probabilistic convenience sampling was used the snowball technique to compose a sample of 27 nurses from different regions from Brazil. Nurses active in risk classification in Brazilian urgency and emergency services, whether public or private, were included. The data underwent Bardin’s content analysis, resulting in three thematic categories: professional trajectory and experience in nursing; decision-making criteria in risk classification; and knowledge and interest in Virtual Clinical Simulation in risk classification. The results showed that, although risk classification requires accurate clinical judgment and quick reasoning, professional training is empirical and heterogeneous. Chest pain, anxiety crisis, abdominal pain, and headache were identified as priority clinical scenarios. The lack of previous experience with virtual simulation, combined with the participants high level of interest, reinforces the potential of this technology as a strategic tool for patient safety.
