Abstract

Openness is one of the key qualities built into Massive and Open Online Courses (MOOCs). From this attribute, students gained space and freedom to create, communicate and express themselves on learning platforms. In this context, textual exposure in MOOCs is common, allowing students to share their thoughts in an open way. These textually represented thoughts are accompanied by sentiments that are often not noticed by teachers. Therefore, this research was guided by the objective of identifying the sentiments exposed in an open way in comments of videos of a MOOC, available on YouTube. The concept of open thinking was the theoretical approach that supported the study. Sentiment analysis was carried out through a methodological composition based on the use of a dictionary, and a social media mining process. The MOOC consisted of 11 videos, and had 111 comments. The results led to the identification of four groups of expression of feelings: thanks, appreciation, inquiry and recognition. The prevailing sentiments are positive and directed mainly towards the teacher and the course contents.
