The COVID-19 pandemic and its characteristics of rapid dissemination and potential for infectivity led the world to adopt measures to suspend the most varied activities, including higher education. With this, different challenges and obstacles shaped the emergency remote teaching model adopted by Brazilian public universities. To contribute to studies on the subject, this article sought to analyze the perceptions of students at a Brazilian public university, regarding the adoption of emergency remote teaching during the COVID-19 pandemic. Therefore, a qualitative and exploratory study was developed, with 392 open responses from students at a federal university in southern Brazil. Data content analysis reached six categories that grouped 65 codes, consisting of 982 excerpts of responses. Among the main findings of the work are the lack of standardization in the models of platforms adopted and criteria for the development of activities and assessments. In addition, issues related to students' emotional difficulties in dealing with the moment of pandemic were also reported.
