Evaluation of the Performance of Degree Courses in Geography in the Main Cities of the Mesoregions of São Francisco and Sertão Pernambucano

The Instituto Nacional de Estudos e Pesquisas Educacionais Anísio Teixeira (INEP) is the public agency responsible for evaluating higher education in Brazil using the Exame Nacional de Desempenho dos Estudantes (ENADE). Based on the results of these assessments, it is possible to measure the performance of higher education institutions, which can inform better decision-making regarding higher education. In this context, the present article aims to evaluate the performance of Geography courses offered in the main cities of the São Francisco and Sertão Pernambucano Mesoregions in the years 2017 and 2021. The methodological procedures included: identifying Geography courses in the cities of Petrolina, Araripina, Arcoverde, Salgueiro, Serra Talhada, and Floresta; evaluating measures of central tendency and dispersion of ENADE scores, specifically the parameters of General Formation and Specific Knowledge between the years 2017 and 2021; investigating significant variations in scores between the 2017 and 2021 editions using statistical inference tests. Geography courses are offered in various cities within the São Francisco and Sertão Pernambucano Mesoregions, primarily in the form of distance education, including both public and private institutions. Regarding the measures of central tendency and dispersion for the components of General Formation and Specific Knowledge in 2017 and 2021, there was homogeneity in the scores across institutions, with no noticeable differences. However, a significant decline in institutional performance was observed in the 2021 edition. This decline was particularly evident in the General Formation scores, indicating greater difficulty for geography students in production and textual interpretation skills.
